Bankruptcy used to be a public procedure. However, the rules in this area have changed.
If you declare yourself bankrupt now, you name will NOT appear in the local newspaper. As such, no one will casually find out that you are bankrupt.
Your Landlord
If you are renting your property, your landlord will be informed that you are bankrupt. This will cause you no problem at all if you rent from the local council or housing association.
If you are renting privately, it is always a good idea to let your landlord know in advance so that you can explain the situation and reassure them that your rent payments will be maintained.
Your Employer
Your employer will not be directly told that you are bankrupt. However, if you are asked to pay and income payments order, the official receiver could request your employer to take this directly from your salary. Again, your employer will not know that you are bankrupt but this could raise questions.
The Insolvency register
Your name and address will appear on the insolvency register until you are discharged from your bankruptcy. The insolvency register is freely accessible via the internet. As such, anyone who knows your name can carry out a search if they wish and will find out that you are bankrupt.
