Generally speaking, if you declare bankruptcy, this will not affect the rented property you are living in.
However, it is important to understand that your landlord will be told that you are bankrupt. If you are in Council or Housing Association accommodation, you will be able to continue living in your property no problem.
If you are renting privately, your landlord may be concerned about your ability to continue paying your rent. As such, it is always best to let them know in advance that you are going to declare yourself bankrupt.
Tell them that it is nothing to worry about and in fact will put you in an even better position to maintain the rent payments as this payment will be ring fenced as part of the bankruptcy agreement.
If you declare yourself bankrupt and then decide to move into rented accommodation, you need to remember that your credit rating will be affected and you many not pass a letting agent’s credit check. As such, you may need to pay rent in advance or ask a friend or family member to stand as guarantor for your rent payments.
