Meeting the Official Receiver

Once you have been declared bankrupt, you will have to have a meeting with the Official Receiver (OR).

It is the Official Receiver not the District Judge who will decide how long our bankruptcy will last for, whether you will be required to pay anything towards your debts and what to do with any assets you have such as a property or car worth more than £1500.

The court will normally give you the details of which OR to contact on the day you are declared bankrupt. You will then normally have to call and book and appointment although on rare occasions you may be able to see the OR on the same day as your court date.

The meeting with the Official Receiver can take place face to face or on the telephone if this is more convenient. It will normally take around 30 minutes.

The OR will ask you for any paperwork they feel necessary to provide adequate confirmation of the information you have provided on your Statement of Affairs.  As a minimum you should expect to be asked to provide your bank statement and wage slips for the last three months and a copy of your rent or mortgage statement.
