In order to declare yourself bankrupt you will need to attend your local County Court in person. If you live in London, you may be able to attend the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand.

Once you have identified your local court, it is best to give them a call. Explain that you want to declare yourself bankrupt and ask whether you need an appointment or whether you can turn up at any time.

If an appointment is required, you should book one.

When you go to court you will need to take your completed application forms and court fee (normally £600). It is also sensible to take with you any supporting documentation although this many not be needed at this stage.

A Court Clerk will take your fee and ensure that your statement of affairs has been properly completed. They will then witness while you sign the form to confirm that it is accurate and correct.

Depending on the court you attend, you may then have to meet with a District Judge. The Judge may ask you some questions about why you have decided to declare bankruptcy and to make sure you understand the implications. This meeting will normally be very short.

You will then be formally declared bankrupt and asked to contact the Official Receiver
